Porto striker, and Spain under-21 international Samu Omorodion has expressed gratitude for the collapse of his proposed transfer to Chelsea, crediting divine intervention for guiding him to FC Porto instead.
The 20-year-old striker had been poised to join the Blues in August, with Conor Gallagher moving to Atletico Madrid as part of the deal. However, the transfer fell through, and Omorodion subsequently joined Porto on a permanent basis.
He told RTVE: “I went through a very difficult period, because, after all, everyone knows that I was about to sign [for Chelsea], but the truth is that it didn’t happen. It was for one reason: God didn’t want it. I’m very happy, very content to be there. The truth is that things are going very well for me and, above all, I want to continue to show what I’m capable of.”
Omorodion’s decision has proven fortunate, as he has enjoyed a remarkable start at Porto, scoring seven goals in six matches across all competitions, including a brace against Manchester United in the Champions League.
In contrast, Chelsea’s expensively assembled squad has left many players struggling for game time, suggesting that Omorodion’s move to Porto may have been a blessing in disguise.
Next up for Omorodion and Porto is a Taca de Portugal third-round clash away at Sintrense on 20 October.
